"It's SHOW TIME!"

Last weekend, the Miniteers (minus our Linda), made a trek down to Seattle for the weekend to attend the Seattle Miniature Show.
Previously, Janine had convinced both Fatima and I that  we should enter a couple of our roombox displays, which would gain us free admission into the show

and
MAYBE we'd
 win a ribbon.

A ribbon award came with mini show dollars to spend,  so we took her advise and
pre-registered our displays.
I entered

"GOTHICA"
and
"GREEN DOLPHIN STREET"

"Gothica" was pretty dusty and as I began sweeping it out I decided to make a few minor adjustments here and there and eventually got it to the point where I felt I could take it to the show.
Most of the adjustments consisted removing the Blu-Tak and glueing things down permanently, but I also added some new wild roses around the doorway, which softened the overall look and gave more depth perception.
For "GREEN DOLPHIN STREET"
I gave it a light sweeping and checked the lighting-
but wouldn't you know, the lights were not working!
I had a spare transformer which I swapped out then
re-tested the connection, and the lights worked.
HOORAY!
So last Saturday, well before dawn, Janine, Fatima and I set out for the U.S. border, crossed it and continued on our way to Seattle,
*about Three and a half hours away by car *
The ride down went quickly with all of us chatting back and forth about life and minis,
and minis,
and minis...
Once we'd arrived at our destination, both Fats and I set up our exhibits.
Gothica was a quickie but GDS took more time.
When everything was finally in place, I turned on the power and
WHOA!
90% of my lights burned out!
In my haste to get them operating, I neglected to inspect the output voltage of one of the replacement transformer, assuming that it was also a 12volt.
I had mistakenly connected a 20 volt transformer to a
12 volt house!
><
You live and learn. :(
Nothing I could do about it, but accept it-

then drown my sorrows in the Sales Room
with some
SHOPPING THERAPY!
YES, I Did some SERIOUS damage to my wallet but by the end of the day, I was pretty happy with my little bits and pieces.

Later on the 3 of us did a bit of late night show and tell in our room, which was a fun way to end the day!

The following morning I went back to the display area to check on my house lights again, and found that

I had WON!
TWICE!
Green Dolphin Street
(with nearly all the lights burnt out) had received
BEST OF SHOW
AND
GOTHICA
had WON
FIRST PLACE!

:D
HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!!!!!!
Almost the first thing I did with my show dollar winnings was to invested in a really lovely ornate chest of drawers from Julia Stewart of Aristocratic Attic which is pictured below.  I am looking forward to including this lovely chest SOMEWHERE inside Villa Leone!
I know that the blue floral china tea service is very
English Country and Not Italian, but I have a weakness for mini tea sets and this one needed to come home with me. ;P
Janine presented me with the tall green glass vase as a gift!

And although I went down with a shopping list, the only thing which really I didn't expect to find was the
Italian Coffee percolator, but I did!
  SCORE!

the other 2 silver pots were an added bonus!

I LOVE
mini tea pots!

The china ducks were from a vintage dealer and the assorted glassware was from the vendor
 Country Store Miniatures

The plastic chest above is another vintage piece made by Ideal.
It was a bargain at 5 dollars
Most of what I bought was tiny and much of it found in the discount bins, but not the books.
The 2 antique books were bought because of the
beautiful illustrations and because they're of Italian origin and wonderfully aged.

Another bargain basement chest of drawers
@ $3.00
And for no particular reason, I bought a pair of worn red cowboy boots?
and also a SHOWER CAP
made by a dear friend of mine named Dena, who
2 years ago, gifted me with one for
GREEN DOLPHIN STREET
and is now making them for sale at
CJN Miniatures in Seattle.
This for sure, will be going into the bathroom of
Villa Leone! :D

I wanted a work table for the kitchen at Villa Leone so this one looked like it would fit the bill.
The drawers open and it is already distressed and

well aged-

what more could a girl ask for?

another little gift from Janine
a vintage style kitchen flour sifter!

here's A tiny potholder which I also couldn't resist

And I Found the perfect meat grinder for the table too!
The mandarin oranges and the pears were treats I'd ordered from a vendor which I first saw on the blog of
"LATCHKEY AND JONQUIL"
The peeled oranges and sliced pears are from

 Yulia Yakobson, in Estonia.
They are truly Marvelous, and I can't recommend her work highly enough!
Plate is from the Seattle Show
As a belated November birthday present, Fatima had previously given me a box of assorted tiny treasures.
Included inside was a Yummy Italian Panatone
complete with a paper wrapper! :D
Canned peaches from the Seattle Show as well as the glass bowl which I've filled with Yulia's oranges.

The ripe Fimo pears were made by me.

Bottles, jar and the scoop from the Show
Canning by Janet Brownhill- U.K.
I simply Love her work!

The bread and knife are by Pat___? from California, I lost her card and her last name, but hopefully Janine will have that information when she posts about the
Seattle Show on her blog
"MINWORKS"
Pat makes many incredible things, but she specializes in orchids and fresh vegetables which are all sliceable and peel-able!
www.twinheart.com

The basket was another bargain from the show, but the breads I made myself with air dry clay.

I have always been hesitant about working with Fimo or Sculpey but if your making cheese then air dry clay just doesn't cut it.
I made the assorted cheeses using polymer clay.

Speaking of Polymer Clay...

Fatima made the wine jug out of polymer clay; part of my birthday gift and
I think it's Marvelous!
It, along with the braided garlic and the onions pictured below, are ALL destined for Villa Leone
and all by the Amazing Fatima!

I was told by both Miniteers that
Salted Cod was a MUST HAVE
for my Italian Kitchen

The oversized cutting board was another lucky find at the Seattle Show along with the ceramic asparagus.

Stoneware jug another show gift from Fats

I made the sausage varieties from Fimo following this youtube video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JX8LIlqYB5U
I think that I am becoming obsessed with making mini food.
I've made tons of it and although
most of it is pretty awful, there are usually a few items from the pile which are worth keeping.

After Day# 1 at the show, we made a short visit to the
Value Village thrift store which was located right next door to our hotel.
I found this HofM table kit hanging on the rack, but
the BEST THING of ALL
 WAS WHAT JANINE DISCOVERED THERE!

A FANTASTIC BOOK of
 ITALIAN VILLA INTERIORS!

And inside is where
I FINALLY found my inspiration kitchen!!!

Hopefully, if I plan it right I will have enough room to  display some of my
MANY MINI FOODS

as well as the wonderful Kitchen Minis which I have been collecting which will include many of the
the cherished gifts from all of my friends.

Thank You
Janine and Fatima, for a VERY Memorable Seattle Show weekend!
Here's to the GOOD LIFE! :D

  1. Firstly.. A huge hug and congratulations for your two big wins at the Seattle show. It was well deserved. Your miniature builds and interiors are the best!!! So are your exteriors and stunning gardens. How you managed to make so many gorgeous flowers and plants for your garden is beyond me. One stinking vase of flowers kicks my proverbial. For some reason it just exhausts me. I am so thrilled for you! I was really confident you were going to walk away with first place when Janine said she was taking your work to the show. I just knew you'd clean up! :-))

What a wonderful bunch of treasures you bought at the show. Plus those fantastic gifts! :-)
You have done a great job creating all the food. No surprise to me. Your talent seems to be endless. Is there anything you can't do? ;-)

Wishing you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY... (though a bit belatedly).

    1. Hi Catherine,
Thank YOu Very Much for your Congratulations! :D
I was surprised and greatly pleased to win for both Green Dolphin Street and for GOTHICA, but what made me REALLY HAPPY was being able to talk to some of the people who were seeing my displays as well as eves dropping on some of their private comments about them; shameful to admit, but true! ;P
I am pretty pleased with the bunch of tiny treasures I was able to find, not to mention the various gifts from my very dear friends.

After reading your comment, I had to back-track and re-edit my post to clarify that my birthday was actually last November and that Fatima's birthday gifts were belated ones which she had given me in January!
Although we try to celebrate each others birthdays closer to the dates, we are not always able to do so, so Fats' was just catching up.
But Thank you anyway, for your belated birthday wishes Catherine, just don't ask me my age because THAT's not mini! :((

    2. Hahaha No more mini birthdays for me either Elizabeth.

What fun to be able to hear the comments from people who had no idea you were standing right there. I can see how it might have made you feel eves dropping. Still, I am sure the guilt was assuaged by the pure (high/joy) feelings of those gorgeous ribbons.

    3. It was kinda like being a fly on the wall, hearing what people had to say, and since it was all good, the "guilt" was quickly forgotten. ;P

  2. Dear Elizabeth, CONGRATULATIONS!!! I am not surprised that you won the awards.... your works go beyond the usual great buildings to the truly extraordinary evocative and impeccably detailed show pieces! You don't stop where so many do... you insist on the perfection of mood and the pursuit of your vision until it is crystal clear! You have a gift for making the "story" come alive in your creations. So Bravo for a well deserved win!
As for the "collecting" you have done while there.... I am drooling! You have found so many gorgeous and unique treasures to add to your stunning rooms! I can't wait to see where they all fit in as you develop Villa Leone to its fullest potential! I am so glad you had a fun trip beyond the show too, and found that book! I have a weakness for big books like that....! As for the food you got.... (I am hungry now!) and that tea set! And that tiny vintage flour sifter that is identical to my RL one!!!! I don't know how you do it, you find the most wonderful treasures!!! I could go on and on.... Wow! And Happy belated Birthday Too! :)

I think that when Janine found that book, it immediately became my VERY FAVORITE THING!
I have found quite a few research books over the past number of months but this one book of Country Houses of Tuscany puts all of the others I have in the shade. The book is written in 3 language, which at first we didn't realize, but I would have taken it anyway just for the photos. But since the text and the captions are also in English, I am able to read the families and the historic details written about each of the 19 properties featured within.
I am really looking forward to using the book as a guide as I begin work on the interior of Villa Leone.
And I agree with you Betsy, the food items Always make me hungry too! ;P

If you ever get the opportunity to visit the Seattle Show then I hope you'll take it! The show venue is spacious, the dealers plentiful, lots of variety, and the hotel itself is comfortable if you decide to stay the weekend. It was 2 years between the last time we had gone to the Seattle Show and so we were all really looking forward to it.
I spoke to Janine today and she is hoping to post about the trip on her MINWORKS blog and show n'tell about all of her Fabulous Finds from the show, so stay tuned! :D

    3. Thank you again Penelope. :) It looks easy in the youtube videos, yet it is more tricky than I'd thought. Air dry is a more familiar medium to me but I'll get use to the polymer if I keep on practicing.

And I'm looking forward to a new post on MINWORKS just as much as you are! :D

    1. Thank You Very Much Linda! :D
I have no one but myself to blame regarding not reading the label on the transformer and thus burning out all of those bulbs. Some I can replace, but there are some fixtures which will have to remain as is. :(
When I got home, I took a good look at ALL of the transformers I have stored in a drawer and found a second one which was also unusable.
This is checking them NOW is what's called closing the barn door AFTER all of the livestock has escaped. :/
But I did have LOTS of fun at the show and again later in setting up the scenes for this series of photos. A small preview for some time yet in the future as well as to help me remember what I bought!

I have no idea how Janine spotted this book since the title on the spine is written in German, but I am over the moon that she did because at long last I have a vision for the kitchen which I can actually see! :D

I am always tickled to read which items others find the most intriguing and I have to agree that those red cowboy boots caught my eyes as soon as I saw them on the table. I was somewhat remiss about collecting business cards, but I know that the the vendor was
Wright Guide to Miniatures and I also just checked and they have an on-line store too.
The sweet potatoes by Pat, not only look edible but they can be peeled which I find fascinating!
It took an extra bit of time when standing at Pat's table because she was carefully slicing her fruits and vegetables for each individual customer who requested it.
      Now THAT'S customer service! :D

As I was sweeping the dust out of GOTHICA, I was reconnecting to it again and found that it Always make me feel like I'm in a magic space; an Aladdin's Cave or a fairy land where time seems to stand still.
The idea for it is from a Bible verse in Isaiah 2:4 " and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their swords into pruning hooks..."
I don't know if I have the "fairy hands" as you've described, but I Thank you for recognizing a Peaceable Kingdom where perhaps the fairies live. :D

CONGRATULATIONS! I am so happy you entered, not so much for the prize, which is awesome, but because other miniaturists got to see your amazing work! will do a happy dance in your honor.
If I were to mention every item I loved, my comment would be as long as your post. I must say all the food is amazing...so well done and looks so delicious and realistic! The first chest is a favorite of mine. the detail is stunning and will be right at home in the villa. Another piece that jumped out at me is the meat grinder, but my absolute favorite of all is the magnificent tea set. I love it! Remember, Venice was a port of trade so I think English tea sets might have found their way there. I am so glad you won and I commend you on your shopping.

The chest from the "Aristocratic Attic" is a Wonderful souvenir of the Seattle Show and probably the most elegant looking of all of my purchases. I hope I'll find the Right place inside the Villa to do it justice.
The Meat Grinder was the only one I saw at the show so it was meant to be, but the tea set was my very first purchase! I am hoping that Janine will have the name of the vendor when she posts on her blog since the husband and wife team had quite a lot of china tea sets and silver at their table.
Thank You again for your Congratulations Giac, which I shall be sure to relay to my empty purse. :0

  41. Hello, Elizabeth - and CONGRATULATIONS on your fabulous wins at the Seattle Show! I'm very happy for you - it's a well-deserved honor, and I'm not ONE BIT surprised! I hadn't seen your "Gothica" room box before; I love the detail, and the wild roses around the doorway set the room off to perfection. How disappointing for you to lose the lights in Green Dolphin Street! What a major blow! (So to speak.) But obviously it showed to great advantage even without lights. Green Dolphin Street is a wonderful work, one of my all time favorites, so I'm doubly happy that it won Best of Show, even without anyone consulting me! You made some gorgeous purchases; I love the Julia Stewart chest of drawers and cannot wait to see it in the Villa Leone. The antique books, too, are special, and all the food items are exquisitely made. The wine jug made for you by Fatima is lovely; I had just finished making a Sculpey urn when I read your post and saw the wine jug; made me want to start all over again! (But I didn't - it was hard enough the first time!) I know just how you feel about your new book on villa interiors; what a Fabulous Find! This was such a delightful post with all your new treasures arranged and photographed so beautifully. Thanks for sharing the fun!

I'm Glad that you have been introduced to GOTHICA because it remains one of my personal favorites!
And YES, blowing the lights was Very Disappointing and knowing it was because of my own carelessness was even more galling, but as the saying goes- "the show must go on".
Unbeknownst to me, the Show organizers provided a HUGE flashlight on the table where my doll's house was, so that people could shine the light into it and see more of the shadowed interior, which was a Kind and Thoughtful thing for them to do.
Meanwhile, I had LOADS of Fun getting to see all of the Marvelous Minis that the vendors had on display as well as getting re-inspired in a BIG way before I made my various purchases. I'm Very glad that you are enjoying them just as much as I am. :D
All in all, it was a Beautiful Weekend spent with 2 of my closest friends which despite all its mishaps, still turned out to be a Treasured and Happy memory!

As it happened, whenever I ventured over to the display area where my projects were, there was always a small crowd around my entries taking photos and making comments about them.
