Night Gardening

It is no secret that I do most of my miniature making under the cover of darkness.
Maybe because at night the house is quiet and I have begun something that I don't want to stop and/ or I just don't know when to go to bed.   Whatever the reason, I choose to work mostly at night.
I have been working steadily on the garden border at the left side of the front door and I FINALLY think that I have it finished enough to show you.  However, I haven't completed the garden along the front retaining wall to be able to show you that section yet.  Nevertheless, I thought that I would treat all of you to a little teaser in the meantime.
So here is

My miniature garden at night.

Looking down from the pink climbing rose and onto the purple clematis and the euphorbia
growing next to the front step
Ah ha,... the cat is on the prowl again as he patrols the garden that he thinks, is his.
A shaft of moonlight highlights the flowers

And there is just enough light to see what has been busy growing
since your last visit here
To the extreme left is a Japanese Berberis (and very prickly too, I might add). Tucked in beside it is a tall, lone purple Foxglove towering over the white Queen Anne's Lace and the yellow Dill Weed that would soon take over this bed, if it wasn't still contained in a pot.
A border of white Heather fronts the planting bed and growing just behind it is a small patch of purple chives.
New stepping stones run along the length of this border, but already they are looking like they have been around nearly as long as the house itself.

And what do we have here!?
Tucked in within the forest of chives and heather, is a tiny fairy house!
I wonder if there are real fairies fast asleep inside?

The Moonlight and the Fairy House

The Clouds have shifted the light.
Here's that tiny house again, but it is even harder to see.
Let's look instead at the purple clematis and the very healthy euphorbia growing next to it.
The euphorbia was made using the flower kits I purchased from
THE MINIATURE GARDEN
(from the U.K.)
I combined the kit with some of my own materials to get 2 different varieties of euphorbia.
Probably the trickiest part of assembling it was the attachment of the leaves to the stem.  I found later, that the best glue to use for this kit and the clematis and the climbing roses, was
FLORA BOND.
It worked better than all of the other glues I tried, for enabling the foliage to adhere and then,
stay stuck!

But returning again to the garden;
the purple clematis flowers came off of my abandoned doll's house, currently residing in my garage.

Here they are in close up

the clematis is climbing up the sturdy canes of the ancient climbing rose
the cat comes back into view
the dill, the chives and the heather, next to the white
Queen Anne's lace

The night wears on,
and the garden is ready for bed, even if I am not.

but that is all I can show you for now, and you must wait until morning.

The cat has done his prowling for the evening and is satisfied that all is well.
But now that darn cat, is at the front door again!

"MEOW"
which translated means:
"I want to come back in!"

goodnight garden

  2. I think I said it last time but it is worth saying again... This is the most beautiful miniature garden I have ever seen!!!

A garden around a dollhouse sets it off so nicely. It softens the hard edge look of a house. As much as I would love one around my (someday) house I know I would be weeding the garden everyday with a pair of tweezers plucking off cat hairs. They float through the air here. They are the bane of my existence !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)

    1. Hi Catherine! WOW! What a nice thing to say about my garden; Thank You! :D
I agree that a garden or yard space, visually softens the edges of a doll's house but sometimes it is tricky to easily incorporate a garden. Fortunately for me, this 'Arthur' is not too wide to accommodate one. And although, I'm not weeding real cat hairs out of it, I am regularly sweeping it clean. So, it appears that what ever a person chooses to do, big or small, once it is done, there is ALWAYS... the Maintenance! :/
      sigh... that's life

  3. Yes, Robin is absolutely right - it's magical!
Elizabeth, your garden looks so inviting and even if it's getting cold in Berlin, I have the feeling of a summer night and I swear, I could hear crickets and from the corner of my eye I saw a moth flying :)
Wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing.

  4. Oh Elizabeth! How you manage to create such realism in your mini gardens is beyond me! And the Beauty, and the Mood you manage to show... in the moonlight... and the Fairy House!!!! Soooo Lovely! And the close-ups of the flowers does not destroy the realism!!! This is a Garden I could walk around in.... smelling the roses and yanking a pesky weed or two!!! I can sympathize with your not being able to stop and go to bed.... The creative flow gets going.... and pays no attention to Time.... only details and Dreams! You are managing to create a "Dream" garden for this house..... oh, how I hope to learn a trick or two from you ..... when I finally get around to trying to make a garden I will be back here combing your posts for every tip I can find!!! I can't wait to see more of this Fantastic Fantasy Garden! But Please.... do let the cat in!!! (He is such a wonderful addition to your pictures and your story!) I really do agree that this is the most beautiful Miniature garden I have ever seen!!!

    1. Hello my dear Betsy! Thank You So Much for your Very Kind words! :D Trying to achieve the realism is what I truely like to do but I have my limits there because I know that I am more of an impressionist rather than a realist, when it comes to my art. Your comment about the illusion not being destroyed by the close-ups of the flowers, really pleases me Betsy. I can't tell you how many times I had to redo plants that I thought looked alright, only to find that the camera said otherwise. And as far as learning a trick or two..... I am going to be using YOUR INSTRUCTIONS on how to make POPPIES, when it is time to begin on the other side of the garden. So Thank You in advance , my dear friend, for how you and your work have in turn, inspired me to dream.....

  7. Hi Elizabeth...
You are truly making me want to garden in real life. This garden looks so magical, so real, so inviting, so well done. The mood is amazing. I love the light and how the different flowers which only you and my other friend Janine know by name, I might add, come to life and look so perfect in their setting. I really feel like this garden is so real you will have to weed for sure. Can't wait...can't wait...will see it soon. Yippeeee!

    1. Hello Fatima my Dear Friend and Maker of Fabulous Mini Peonies! :D Thank You for your compliment about the garden looking inviting. I was striving to make it look that way as well as set a mood with the moonlight. Believe it or not Fats, taking the photos in this lighting was a whole lot easier than trying to take them in daylight. :))
But to set the record straight, my head has limited space available for plant names, so I had to look up some of them so I wouldn't be calling everything Big purple plant, little purple plant,.. etc. But most of them I have grown in real life, either past or present, and so they are kind like 'old friends', so to speak.
      I am saving some space for weeds and making some space to showcase your wonderful Peonies which you made for me for my birthday, and I am looking forward to our Miniteer's visit next month, too. And so.... Until then;
it is back to work! :D

You do such a nice job with the lighting, and whats more, if there is anything "off" it really shows up in a night scene. I am happy to say I think your garden passed with flying colors!

When I remember back to what this little dollhouse started out as, it is rather amazing to me what you have done with it. The contrast is startling! One of the things that I have enjoyed about working on this garden project, is that it has forced me to look at nature in a more observant way. My real life garden is right outside my studio window and I can look out and see it anytime, but when I started making the plants to install in my mini one, I had to stop and then go to the window and Really look! There were plants that I had to remove and then begin them again, after I say how a plant really grows and then how I had made them. I'm not there yet but I shall still keep on trying to get it closer to the truth.
Meanwhile, your enjoyment of this section of the garden, has made my day! :D
