BEFORE AND AFTER

Back in October 2013, I told you the story of "How Arthur took a Bath" At that time I believe I mentioned that the story would no doubt have a sequel as the room was probably only the first draft and I have been known to fiddle with stuff until I feel that it is finally right.  Well, I was right and no sooner did the bathroom hit the air waves that I immediately set about revamping it.   By the beginning of November the bathroom was re- done, but I didn't want to over-load you with more of the same stuff, so I have left it until now for more show and tell.

This is how the bathroom in #43 Green Dolphin Street, reads now.
THE New and Improved Victorian style Bathroom!
***
and below is how the Old bathroom
use to look

 "Before"
Do you see the differences
in the "After"?

One of the questions that I regularly ask myself when composing a room in miniature is-
"Would I like living in this space?"
To be honest, the bathroom shower curtain was not working for me, especially after I installed the side chair and used the bolder toile print on the seat cushion.  Once I gave that seat cushion the "2 thumbs up", then the old shower curtain had to go!  The original toile fabric was white with a black print.  To make the curtain more harmonious with the chair upholstery, I stained the cotton with 'Oak' Decorator's Glaze.  I used all the original steps from my

"BED CURTAINS" tutorial,
lusing the gel glue as directed.  Then I added to the wet fabric, a small amount of the gel Decorator's Glaze and smooshed it all through the gluey fabric and then when I was satisfied with the color concentration, I proceeded with the Pretty Pleat directions as I outlined previously.  The final results are as you can see. I now have a brighter and prettier shower curtain and valance, that perfectly matches the chair seat in the bathroom.
This makes me much happier! :D

This is the first time I have used this product to dye fabric and so it was experimental but it works!
I also use this to add aging to the walls and the floors as well as add the toasted, golden brown accents to miniature baked goods.

 It is very versatile.
Another change was to add the BULL'S EYE MIRROR (using my tutorial) over the tub.   I used the second mirror that I had left over after doing the original tutorial and by mounting it over the tub on the ceiling slope, it allows a better look at the "water" inside the tub.  It also eats up an otherwise 'dead zone'  space on the wall, and reflects more light.
***
Just as a side note:
I often am very grateful for blogging my own tutorials because believe it or not, I forget how I did stuff and this gives me the opportunity to try it out again to see if they really work! :D
In this photo, you can see the "steam" (diluted white glue) on the mirror and the reflection of the water inside the tub.

The sink has now been semi- affixed to the wall and I have added a few more items to the ledge around the taps.  On the chair I laid a towel and on top of the towel is a blow dryer, made from a phone charger plug and a bit of black coated wire.  I guess I will now have to make a wall- socket for it around the sink, but that I can do a little later.
The brassier that Janine made, is draped over the edge of the sink.
( I really like this little bit of lingerie. )

This is Porcelain touch up paint that is meant to be used to  fix nicks and chips in Real Life porcelain fixtures.  I used it to paint over my miniature toilet tank and the plastic toilet bowl.  It gave the finished piece a bit more depth.  I continued to fiddle around with the toilet and cleaned it up a little so it wasn't quite so derelict looking.
I still wanted it to look old and dated, but a little more "user friendly" so to speak.

( hahaha )

The revamped toilet
Keeping true to form, I added "water" to the bowl using the same melted gel candle that I had used in the tub.  The funny thing was that, as I was pouring the water in, it was "Flushing" out of the bottom of the bowl!  Yikes!!
I had forgotten to seal up the base.
 (duh)
I corrected the problem right away by gluing some aluminum foil to the underside with Quick Grip glue and then trimming away the excess.  I was then able to pour the "water" back into the bowl without any further leaks.
Water in the toilet bowl, and it looks pretty good
I changed out the old long rectangular framed painting  for this more compact model
Remember the radiator that I mounted with wax directly to the wall under the window?
I had wanted to make the unit appear as if it was anchored to the walls by actual pipes and plumbing, and not sticky wax.
The radiator was to stand out and away from the wall without intruding into the bathroom any more than was necessary.  I solved this problem with the help of grommet heads.
You can just see the silver toned metal grommet heads that I inserted between the grill to move the radiator forward and into the room.
Since the grommet heads are flanged and flat, I could use the wax ( undetected) to hold the unit in place on the wall.  It is positioned where it can effectively circulate the heat into the room and yet not take up any more physical space than it has to.

Between the sink and the chair is a metal waste basket that Janine gave me a long time ago.  It use to be a lipstick holder and by adding a gold filigree bottom and some bead feet it is now a  miniature waste bin.  Perfect for this bathroom in shape, size and color.

And finally a
basket of clean and fluffy towels that are filled with
the sweet fragrance of the summer sunshine.
Line dried and standing at the ready.
***
So there you have it.
The bathroom for #43 Green Dolphin Street is done.
Of course that doesn't mean that I have stopped fiddling with it entirely ...

But I think I will have to stop...

Well at least, for Now!
(smiles)

  1. Oh, Elizabeth. I love the yellow. Thank you once again for sharing your techniques. I just love the thought and detail that goes into your miniature scenes such as steam on the mirror, reflection of the bath water in the mirror and water in the toilet. These details give both realism and character. I also love the little metal waste basket. It is very sweet. It is amazing what you can use for miniatures. I am trying to make some plant pots out of a cardboard tube from a fax roll as we speak. I don't know if they will turn out but it is worth a try!

    1. Hi Sharee! I love the yellow too! The yellow curtain is much more cheerful looking I think, and so I am glad that you like how it looks also. Steaming up the mirror was a kinda fun experiment to try; and I had wanted to put water in the toilet back in October but then thought -"Awe, who cares?"...... Then only yesterday, just before I began taking the shots, I decided that " Hey, I care! " and so I hauled out the gel candle to melt and pour. It is one of those little details that I love to do but I also like the toilet lid DOWN so it will just be my little 'secret' pleasure!
I am delighted that you like the waste bin Sharee and I am sure Janine will be pleased.:D
Good luck with your plant pots from the fax roll. In this business you know nearly 90% of everything mini, starts from rather humble beginnings! :))

  2. I am always just astonished by the realism in your shots. I know this is miniature and I see your process, but the mind still stubbornly refuses to believe!

The amount of detail that you have placed on each item is "boggling my old noggling"..er noggin ;P

Am I terrible for seeing all the lovely things in this room but fascinated by the old toilet and rusted sink? ....well I did say you boggled the noggin, must take time to process the perfection!

    1. Hello Ms. Fanaticus! Thank You! heehee! You and I are fascinated by exactly the same kind of things Jane! I love old and used, the rusty and the woebegone, and anything that has seen their better days behind them. Perhaps it's because I "feel" their pain. Or maybe it's because they are the "underdogs" and I have a urge to want to rescue. This is okay in miniature, but it can be a real hazard and a liability at the produce store! I can't tell you how sorry I can feel for bruised and over-ripe fruits and vegetables. It can almost make me want to cry when I resolutely have to pass them over! :(
Steady on, elizabeth ..... look the other way, and not at that lonesome brown banana..... sigh

  3. What a great re-do. I love it all. The fabric for the new curtain is wonderful. You have put so much thought and so many realistic touches everywhere. From the steam on the mirror to the water in the toilet. haha I don't think I have ever seen anyone do that before. :-)

    1. Hi Catherine! I am so pleased that you like the changes! :D I am Much Happier with the re-worked curtain too. It has changed the atmosphere of the entire bathroom from "rather dull" to "more vibrant". Now the idea of "living" in this space was a lot more enjoyable! :D The steam on the mirror was a new thing to try as was the water in the toilet. Both were a lot of fun and worth it in the end!

  4. Well, Ms Elizabeth,
I must have looked a little silly just now. I was sitting in front of my computer staring, nodding and smiling. I could appreciate and understand everything you shared with us. At first I felt a little chilly in there with the window open. Then the heat came on and steamed up the mirror. The aged fixtures made me think I was visiting an elderly aunt who had collected fine perfumes and nice things like filigreed waste baskets over the years. Your posts aren't just pictures. Your rooms always evoke feelings and stories in me! Beautifully done...just beautiful!

It PLEASES ME TO NO END that you have made up a story to go with the photos! :D That is Real Success! That you can feel like you have visited with an elderly aunt or a friend and that the photos conjure up images in your mind, is what it is all about for me. So Thank You, Grandmommy. This is truly a very treasured compliment!!! :D

    1. Hello my dear Rosethe'! I am Delighted that you have enjoyed the visit to this bathroom again as well as all of the progress that has been made to up-date it! I am also pleased , that you have seen the possibilities that are presented with the various plugs that look like mini blow dryers! I made mine at the beginning of 2013 with the intent to use it in a VERY GIRLY roombox. That project has stalled and has been in limbo for nearly a year and so I shop-lifted the blow dryer for my Green Dolphin street bathroom instead!
More Good news! I bought a 12 pack of traditional Christmas Crackers this past Christmas. And contained amongst the paper crowns and usual worthless junk prizes and riddles, were some packages of ear plugs with jacks. And ALL of the plug jacks look like mini blow dryers! Whoopie! Now I can make some more! Christmas comes not once but Twice! :D

Color is so important to set the mood, as you know so well! But I am not a Master, just a Fiddler on the mini roof! I don't always know What I Want but I can almost always tell what it is that I Don't Want. That is why I constantly review the photos. That old curtain looked too dull and out of step with the walls and the floor and the chair cushion. I feel much happier with how it all works Now! :D

It had been gently suggested, that perhaps I had over emphasized the age of the toilet. I had to agree and so with a few "nips and tucks" I removed at least 5 Days from the way the toilet use to look! hahaha Well, perhaps it is little more up-dated than that! heehee The point is that now I wouldn't hesitate to consider using it when needed, whereas BEFORE I was not quite so sure! :D

    1. Hi Caroline! I am so glad that you like the gel candle idea!! :D I just take a small, perhaps less than a tablespoon at a time, and place it in a clear microwaveable glass and then set it into the microwave for 4 minutes at a time. The glass is clear so that you can see when it is melted. None of the books advocate doing this in the microwave because of the Danger of Fire but I have done it this way many times and it works fine. The gel is super hot so make sure that your surface is protected and your fingers are out of the way. It sets up rather fast so Make it Right the first time, but if not, simply peel everything out, re-melt and start again.
I saw a blog where the gel candles were what was used to fill gel capsules and make the mini bath oils that you see everywhere and also for making mini gelatins with sliced fruit. The results are clean and easy and unlike resin, you are not stuck with it if you ever wish for a change.

I really love the differences. I remember moving into a couple of old "tear-me-downs" with toilets looking just like this one so I know the look and it is very convincing! I love the fog on the mirror! Perfect! I love the little garbage pail and I do remember when Janine was making them. Now....you have sent me looking and investigating the usage of the "hair dryer". I know it was invented in 1890 but I'm not sure and can't seem to find the exact era for Green Dolphin. I'm sure you have and that you have done your research!, but you know how I am....a little a - - - l....hmmmm. Thank you for the great post. Can't wait to see it on Tuesday.

    1. Hooray for Fats! I detect that you are over your flu and feeling better! Yipee! Do not distress yourself my dear Fatima about the authenticity of the use of the blow dryer! Remember that this is a contemporary time period within an old Victorian Style house. Problem solved :D The lady of the house loves vintage Victorian and collects memorabilia but she still enjoys things like telephones and blow dryers and modern electric lighting. But still I know that you are a avid researcher and a stickler for the finer details. :) The addition of the blow dryer only means that my time frame has moved from the 1940's and into the 21st century. Gleefully, this now allows for even more vintage stuff inside the Arthur, and I can time travel from now to as far back as I care and dare to go, to gather olden pieces that will add to the general ambiance. :D
Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday!

I believe that it is always the "everyday" stuff that makes a mini house a home, don't you? Believe it or not, I am Not very observant in other areas but when looking at an entire miniature room in a photo it it easier for me to see what might be otherwise over-looked. By mentally "shrinking" myself down and doing a mini "walk-about" within the space, it becomes easier to determine what features would make sense or not, and where accessories should be placed to allow them to be usable. I often change my mind and that is how the "fiddling" begins...... Again! :D

This is NOT what I had originally envisioned when I began this project last year! Every time I start with one idea it evolves into another,- ALWAYS. I am not complaining because in the end I usually like it better than what I initially had had in mind but it does make for a lot of wasted time and product as I struggle to try and impose my will on the spaces. :)) I am always inspired by other peoples works and so if I inspire others then I am just passing it on. Here on the west coast where I live it has been cold and Damp and that has been a blessing by comparison. Having Summer in the doll's house has been a way to take my mind off of the cold and dismal weather. Other than that I AM well, Ilona,. :)) I had a lot of fun filling that old toilet with "water". More to me is Always better and fiddling helps to get it right! :)) I highly recommend " more fiddling" as the cure to indecision as just trying things here and there can often lead to a solution you never even thought of. Works for me!
      Big Hug Back! :D

    1. Ahh Susan! :D I Thank You so much!!! It was when I looked at the original photos that I came to the conclusion that the curtain was photographing strangely with pinkish undertones, and That really bugged me. It looked one way with the lights off and a weird pinky grey with the lights on! I had to change it and decided to match it to the seat cushion for uniformity. I am so much happier with it now as it does indeed "warm" up the room and makes it so much prettier to be in. I think that the Lady of the House is now satisfied and can take her private bath with great Pleasure! :D

  30. the idea of a round mirror above the bathtub is a great idea! it changes everything. I never would have thought to do that. I like the way you make steam with diluted glue. it's on I'll try it one day. I admire your small bath taps .... I want the same! haha! By cons I do not always want to sit down on your toilet bowl .... rather go out in the garden. this is not possible! the new shade curtains is perfect, it is more in harmony with the wallpaper. all the little details are perfect. this bathroom just needs a major clean :))))) is that the house is finished? this is the last room?
    Je vous embrasse .

    1. HO Ho Ho, Catherine! I am laughing out loud!!!! Truly I agree with you about it needing a major clean too, and as a matter of fact, Janine said the same thing to me about the tub when she first saw it! heehee But I can not make myself do it. For this house I like it old and a little bit dirty. I think that the toilet bowl is a few degrees Better than when you first commented on it but I shall never change it now! hahahaha However, I am Delighted that some things have your approval and so I shall forgive the insult to my toilet bowl! :D
The round mirror over the tub I owe to YOU as it was after I saw your round empty picture frame in the photos that you sent me of your mouse house bathroom that reminded me of the Bull's Eye mirror that I had stored away. As soon as I mounted it above the tub I saw that it solved all the problems of what makes the most sense for that dead space! I used diluted MATT Mod Podge for the steam! Now as to your question as whether the house is finished: NO... I still have the kitchen and the staircase to do. I am full of anxiety about the staircase but it won't get done by itself so that will be next. I plan on making the kitchen just as worn out as the bathroom so brace yourself Catherine! Rickety stairs and a barely functional kitchen are on the back burner!!!! :D

  31. Wow! I love all the changes Elizabeth! I am in love with your sink and all the old knobs on it and the tub. So charming. I also love all the accessories... down to the water in the toilet. I have never used glaze before but maybe I should try. I usually stick to watered down acrylic paint to make my things look old and dirty. The new shower curtain looks great as well! I really want to try your pleated tutorial somewhere and sometime. Can't wait for your next post!

    1. Hello Lindsey! Thank you for the lovely things that you have said and I too hope that you will try the curtain tutorial. It is really quite easy and having done it now 3 times already I guarantee that it is just as easy as I say it is! I too have tried watered down acrylics for aging and staining but I have found that gel stains are sheerer and easier to apply and with a lot less effort and better results when dried. They are easier to layer over each other and build-able. Using the gel stain on the wet curtain material was a new venture for me but it worked a treat for this project. I like to muck about with stuff and often think that it doesn't hurt to try, even if it turns out to be a "Fail" cause at least I have learned something! I know that You are a lady who has a lot of natural creativity and resourcefulness and I love the way you have up-graded your real life home to the Incredible House that it has become. I can't wait for Your next post; you and Todd are a Terrific Team! :D

    1. My dear Tatiana! Thank You!!! Your comments are always so complimentary towards my work and I greatly value and appreciate them!
I want to say that with the toilet, it was made to look old on purpose. Now, the reason that I made it so, was to see if I could and also that it would fit in with the sink and the tub. No doubt it is OLDER than the other two elements but it is serviceable, so unlike Catherine who would rather "go" in the garden, I would not hesitate to use it myself. ( hahahha) I have a bone to pick with shiny, shiny, shiny, porcelain fixtures and perhaps that is why I went the extreme opposite direction with these. I must get it out of my system before I tackle my next big house project Tatiana! :D And I love to age things, as you can tell. It makes me happy to know that you like the mirror over the tub and as you have said, it now makes the interior of the tub visible to the viewer without having to strain to see into it! I also like the way it reflects the sunlight that pours in and brightens up a dark corner! I just love mirrors!!! Thank You for speaking your mind and heart Tatiana, truly I welcome the feedback!!! :D

  33. Wow!! The level of realism in this scene is very, very high!! Impressive!! Your attention to details is stunning and thank you so much for all the tips that you always share when making or changing a scene. And thank you not only for the tips but for the tutorials as well. When you see miniatures looking so real, I think, it's a push to everybody to try and excel when making something. I'm always fascinated by good (super good) work and you can see when a hobby it's a bit more than just a hobby for you....I'd say it's more of a passion because I can feel it just looking at your miniatures work!! My greatest reward is when I see a tutorial being utilized by someone who has enjoyed it and very often, made the product even Better! That is very gratifying and Always puts a smile on my face! :D

This mini re-make-over was such fun to do and I feel that the changes have made the bathroom even more design cohesive as well as functional. Your reference to "old photos in an album" is treasured, and I am Very Pleased that you have enjoyed the techniques that I have talked about. In real life I can be pretty stingy especially when it comes to cookies and candy, ( just ask my kids) but when it comes to miniatures I love to share what I have learned from others as well as what I have taught myself because "Only by sharing can we fully enjoy this hobby" :))

  46. The new improved bathroom looks fantastic (though I thought it did before as well, but I understand the tinkering mentality, GUILTY! ). I love the little waste bin too. I can't believe your blog is one year old, I must check how old mine is :D. I am also a bit sad that you were worried about how your miniatures would be received. I think your blog is very, very popular and your house has quite a unique style too, so your worries were unfounded.

P.s. You have no idea how much I want into that bathroom with a bottle of cif, a miniature one of course. I get no satisfaction cleaning clean things :D

    1. Heeeheeee I think Sarah that you and everyone else would like to take a scouring pad and some cleaning fluid to this bathroom!!! :D Actually for that matter, me too,. But although I did remove just a teeny tiny bit of grunge from the toilet, I ended up putting some of it back! It just won't let me change it or clean it!? So I shall let it have its way and hope that my next house project, whenever I can get to it, will be more pristine..... well, maybe :))

I personally would not have it in Real Life either BUT for this story that I am telling within the walls of the Arthur, it would not be the same without it. Granted it could be a little cleaner but stains are there because it has been used a lonnnng time and so it has a story to tell all on its own. But thank you for liking the bathroom even In Spite of the poor potty.
    that makes me happy :D
