A LOFTY IDEA! ( revised bedroom of #43 Green Dolphin Street)

"Good, Better, Best.
Never let them rest, until your Good is Better,
and your better
Best!"
When I was in grade 5, this motto was posted across the top of the classroom wall.

simple words to live by
***

I had an idea with regard to the bedroom of #43.  I wanted to make it Better.
Through trails and errors, this is the ( newest) final result.
I HAVE INSTALLED A LOFT!
And sitting inside the loft is a large tin of English biscuits that JANINE of MINWORKS brought over for me, last Wednesday when she and Fats and I had lunch together and then 'Minied our Minds Out', exchanged gifts, ideas and lots and lots of laughter.  We 3 Miniteers, have So Much Fun when we get together, and I will have to show you more of what they both gifted me with on a later posting, but for now I have Janine's  biscuit tin next to a hat box of mine...  But wait!
I am getting waaaay ahead of myself.  Let me take you back to the beginning.
It all began with the Ugly wood beam that I installed on the bedroom wall...

I had placed this beam on the bedroom wall and then heartily disliked it!  I had installed it because it corresponded to the one glued onto the opposite side of the wall, in the hallway.  I had wanted to break up the strong blank vertical wall in the stairwell, with a horizontal beam and so to be consistent I had to duplicate it in the bedroom, but now I was Not Happy :(   The dark beam was too visible, even when the bed was in front of it, I wanted to reverse the whole procedure but it was, by then, too late!  I was now reluctantly committed to the 'Ugly!'  In trying to come up with a variety of solutions to make me like the bedroom again, I began to play with some toile material that was going to be used for a shower and window curtains in the bathroom.  Hmmmm?  If I could find a way to incorporate the curtain fabric to detract from the ugly beam then maybe I could live with it.  I started to play around with the drapes and then the idea of A LOFT, hit me as a possibility!  But how to do it..... ?  It would need to be anchored to the ceiling without looking like a death trap!  I had to mock it up to see.  I tried so many different solutions and combinations struggling to work out the physical problem.  I am miserable at math and anything that requires calculations, so EVERYthing was all by "trying this, and then, trying that".  The problem of how to suspend the loft in a Solid, Reasonable and Logical way was very difficult for me.  I had to build it in place and then to think of what step I should take next to get over the following hurdle.

I mocked it up to see if what I had envisioned, would even Look any good, then
I used some paper to see just what it Would look like with a lowered canopy over the bed
I liked the effect.
But how could I get it to work?
Here with the bathroom in progress, was another possible way of supporting the loft over the bed.  I have a thin beam stretching from one side of the room to the other, but visually, it was totally unacceptable.  I didn't like the way the top of the room was sliced off.  So back to the drawing board trying to figure out how to keep that loft UP!
Meanwhile, I decided to make some more curtains.  I was also looking to see how best to make a valance.  By this stage I was out of the toile fabric and so this meant
No Mistakes were Allowed
( sorry about the fuzzy photo)
And after much doing and redoing, this is the final result!  I found that if I made a solid wall to stretch from the platform of the loft up to the ceiling, then I could trim it out with additional wood to make it appear  as though it was a solid part of the architecture rather than a flimsy 'add on'.  I dropped the curtain panels to the floor from the underside of the valance and made them denser and more substantial by doubling the curtain  over so that the pattern is on both the front  and back of the panels.  The visual weight of the curtains help support the idea of a structurally sound loft above the bed.  I am so relieved to have the canopy and the loft done!  The additional heavier drapes have added even more ambience to the room
 And I am LOVIN IT!

But, then, when I took this shot, a bell went off in my head
'Hey, I've seen this somewhere before!'
 Then I remembered....
Pinned onto my INSPIRATION BOARD that is on my studio wall, I have a tear sheet of a bedroom that I love.
(see below)
Uncanny!  I didn't realize how much it looked like this picture until I was done!
I guess this photo Really WAS Inspiring! :D
#43 Green Dolphin Street
My revised miniature bedroom!
I love the variations of the shapes, spaces and textures.  A future project will include a small ladder which will be kept under the bed for reaching those items stowed up in the loft

I didn't want a solid floor to the loft area, but something that appears visually lighter so I made a plank floor to support the contents in the loft and stained the wood dark, to compliment the other wood trims in the room.  In the pictures you can see what it looks like from the underside.  I LOVE IT!  It reminds me of a berth of a sailing ship and because of that, it then ties in with the voyage that Marianne made
( in the book, Green Dolphin Street ) across the Atlantic to marry William in New Zealand!  A little Nautical reference after all!  (whoohoo! )Things are looking Better and Better all the time!

I was showing my sister Bev, the changes to the bedroom and she commented that now the room looks finished, and there is some privacy for anyone sleeping in the bed and I agree!  Also there is some added warmth during those wet and blustery nights when the wind rattles the old window panes and creeps through any cracks in the uninsulated stone walls.  The thickness of those bed curtains, should ward off Some of the chill that blows through on those cold coastal nights!
ahhh,
Nice and Cosy!

I also gave a little 'face lift' for the standing mirror on the painted chest of drawers.
I added a filigree frame around it, to fussy it up!

So This is now what it looks like with all the items  in place

And here is the entire room with the new bed curtains and also showing the stairwell
And this is the view looking to the left!  I love this shot!
it reminds me of the motion of a boat the way it seems to be leaning left,
weird huh?
So what do you think of my Lofty Idea?
I have really tried to make what was good about this room look even better!
And now I  think that I like it
The Best!
( perhaps even More than the Parlor? )
and speaking of the Parlor; look what Fats made for me when she came over last Wednesday

A MINI BOOK OF
GREEN DOLPHIN STREET!
My two friends, are by far

The VERY Best!
Thanks for the visit

  1. ahhhh! Elizabeth - that looks fantastic! I believe no bed is a bed unless it has drapes, it looks so cosy and warm. I've been thinking about rehashing the bedroom in Daviot House, and you've given me a lot of inspiration to do so, thank you!

I have a question for you - where did you find the toile de jouy fabric that you can tea stain? I bought some recently and went to stain it, but alas it wasn't colourfast and the jouy toiled off! Now I just have a miserable, stained rag....

You are blessed to have such lovely mini friends, I can only depend on the internet in this neck of the woods to make connections!

    1. Hi Jonquil! I am so happy that you have enjoyed this visit to my new and improved bedroom, and if it has inspired you then I am Delighted! Thank You!
As to the fabrics, I purchased mine as quilting fabrics at a local fabric retailer. I find most of the fabrics that I use for my miniatures in the quilting sections and I cull through them to find suitable scales. This is 100% cotton and the print was a bit bigger than what is usual for 1/12th but it works, especially when pleated. I am so sorry to hear about your disastrous results! I have never had that particular experience but what a shock it must have been for you! :[
Here is the name of the maker of the toile, if it is of any use to you. It is by
FAYE BURGOS FOR MARCUS BROTHERS TEXTILES, INC. I just happen to have a square of a blue color-way of the toile with the name printed on the selvage. If you need any further information I will try to get it for you Jonquil.
You are so right about having such lovely mini friends and I do but not only here but also all of those that I have the privilege of knowing through the blogs and that includes You!

    1. Thank you Susan! I highly value your good opinion and it pleases me that you like this bedroom as much as I do! One thing that I shall have to stop doing however, is calling something 'Done' or 'Finished!' hahah I always seem to fiddle with it, right after I make that pronouncement and then I am back to blogging about the same room all over again. :))) Enough already!
I am so thrilled about the mini book and I am going to show off the other goodies that came my way, very soon. I have such generous friends, Susan and I feel that I am incredibly blessed to know them!

From another anglophile - Once heard, you can never forget the rendition of Rule Britannia as sung by Warren Mitchell ..... ;-)

    4. Heeeheeeheee! I always get such a charge out of your follow-up comments, Susan. I am glad that you are satisfied with the Quantity of photos and let me also say that I love to take them so that is no burden to me at all! Culling through them can be a Procedure but I still I like it. I tried to Google up Warren Mitchell singing Rule Britannia, no success yet but I am determined now to hear it :))
The song that I hear in my head when I work on this house is "The Last Farewell" by Roger Whittaker. Do you know it? I love his voice and this song is Seafaring and yet Romantic, a musical expression for this bedroom! Have a listen and tell me what you think.

    5. Unfortunately Warren Mitchells rendition of Rule Britannia is unfit for the tender ears of the current Politically Correct generation so I daren't write them for you Elizabeth ;0) You can hear it in a movie called "Crackers" which is one of the funniest depictions of an Australian family christmas, the whole thing cracks me up and the tune (and words) of Warren Mitchells Rule Britannia stay in my head for weeeeeeks!! Now I'm wondering why we've had this discussion when I think I meant to tell you how much I love your biscuit tin.....oh, and I do like Roger Whittaker and have always loved The Last Farewell, it is playing as I type and I hope the harmony stays with me all day, somewhat more enlightening lyrics than the Un-P-C ditty from Mr. Mitchell :)

    1. Hi Lisa! Thank You So Much! I am a Big Fan of Toile de jouy fabrics and I have amassed quite a few different colors and patterns of it over the course of years. It used to be a whole lot harder to find in a small enough print useful to miniatures, but there is more available now especially if you look in the quilting sections of fabric retailers. And as for the lighting, I Love Light fixtures. I used to get my more expensive ones at the Seattle Miniature Shows and every year I would get something special to bring back home with me. However those little sconces on the fireplace mantle were on sale for $5.00 each one year. Score! The Ni-Glo lamp on the dresser was an indulgence but the hanging fixture is available at most miniature retail shops, so all totaled the lighting is a real mix of high, low and in between. The best part is that it All works together! :D

  10. Hello Lady Elizabeth,
I think you are incredible. The ideas you have and your fearlessness when it comes to taking a finished space and renovating it is wonderful! The loft really grounds the space above the bed (does that make sense?) and the curtains look much better then if it had just been a floating platform. It really makes the bed feel like a nook or a retreat. I think your idea was wonderful and you turned that idea into reality very successfully. It is an incredibly charming and inviting room. A great big HAL YAY YOU YA to you my friend.

    1. Hello My Friend! You are Always so incredibly generous to me! Thank you so very much, Giac! I hear what you are saying about the loft grounding the space above the bed. My sentiments exactly! For the longest time I struggled to figure out how to anchor that loft visually to the rest of the house. Of course I could and did glue it but that is nothing if it doesn't look as if it is structurally supported somehow. When it occurred to me that enclosing the loft was the best solution then I also was singing HAL YAY YOU YA!!! And what a difference it has made to the entire room, much nicer, as you have said Giac, than just a floating platform. I love enclosures, nooks and cubbies and this bed I find very satisfying!
Now as to taking a finished space and fearlessly renovating it..... Just what did YOU just recently accomplish in that respect Mister? Hmmmm????

    1. Hello Rosethe' You are very kind and generous with your compliments and I do so Thank You! I think that the room looks much more romantic too! I attribute it to the additional panels of drapes. I think that the drapes give the room an additional cosy and feminine touch overall, and totally softens it visually. It encloses the bed and hides its secrets, as Ludmila has said, in the loft and that also makes it romantic just by having that shadowy space above the bed! I have left a journal on the chest of drawers just waiting for an opportunity to curl up in the snug and retell the days events within its pages. " Dear Diary, today I went into town and stopped at Roseth's Bookstore where I found a copy of Green Dolphin Street......" :D

    1. Thank you Lea'!!! I recall that I had read about your decision to install a light fixture in your doll's house after it was decorated and to accomplish it, you had to go through a great deal of trouble to remove some finished flooring in the chamber above the parlor and carefully run the wire through channels to get it to where you needed to feed it through the floor, and then you had to repair it all just as carefully afterwards. A whole lot of work involved, but in the end, the wonderful ambience that you were rewarded with made it ALL worthwhile! Some things that could be deemed Destructive may eventually be, more Constructive in the end. That is how I felt about taking the chance on installing this loft. Actually it was not the loft I sought so much as a way to finish the end of the bed. I was never satisfied with the abrupt end at the footboard, When I installed that heavy beam, I was then also dissatisfied with the that wall. That was the final straw and now I felt that I HAD to do something! The loft was a solution that satisfied on so many levels. And now I couldn't be Happier! In order to make a good omelet you must always break a few eggs! :)

Admittedly there are often big regrets like when I put that wood beam on the wall, but then that lead to something, that in the end made that beam an asset rather than an eyesore. So it is all to the good, Praise God! Now as to the drapes I Thank You once again. I shall post how I did them in new tutorial next week. There really is no secret but I how I did them was something that anyone can do and requires no special skills at all, so stay tuned. I have wanted to do a tutorial for a while now and I have tried several options but it is not their time yet. The drapes are a perfect follow-up to this entry so it will be next. Hope you will enjoy it, Ersilia as much as I have enjoyed your process of cereal box baseboards and faux stone finishes on your doll's house project! :D

  28. OOOOHH, Elizabeth!!! I am So Impressed!!! This loft is AWESOME!!! The bed curtains are DIVINE and the atmosphere of the room is enhanced tenfold!!!! WOW!!! I want to curl up there and read that book!!! Your method of achieving your goals is so admirable.... just pursuing that elusive "something" until it comes together! And Oh Boy... it comes together in such a Stunning way! All the details... the plank ceiling, the frame above the bed curtains... the curtains themselves.... it is just All Gorgeous!!! I agree with your sister... it does look and "feel" more complete... cozier... like a private hideaway! Great Inspiring and Inspired work!!!

    1. WhooHoo Betsy!!! Thank You!!! You know what, dear lady? When this was all in the process of "becoming" I kept thinking of your treehouse bedroom ceiling and how you were not satisfied with it even when it was "finished" and so you raised it up and made a complex insert and then proceeded to add the ornamentation until you felt that it was as it should be and then installed it and even though it was difficult as all get out for you to photograph and for us to see, you didn't let that deter you from achieving your objective and doing it anyway! The re-worked ceiling you produced was a Beautiful and Necessary addition that made a significant contribution to the atmosphere of your tree house bedroom! And so my dear Betsy I know that everything that I have shown here, today, is common ground that we both tread.
When you have a to do something to make the project finished for you emotionally as well as finished physically, you will pursue it until You feel it is REALLY accomplished Now tell me if you agree or disagree with all I've just said? But as an Artist I know that you Must agree. I didn't mean to give a speech, Betsy, but I wanted to let you know how much I also am Amazed by your drive and determination to get your work to feel right to you First, and then to everyone else. The Artist's way!:D

    2. Hi Elizabeth! I agree completely that there is an elusive "something" that keeps tugging at us.... or whispering in our brains... that makes us not satisfied with half-way there... and keep on shifting and adding (or subtracting!) until it feels right! It has to do with an image sometimes we aren't even aware that we are copying... like your picture you had forgotten... but it "resonated" so strongly with your "goal" that you kept fiddling! I am honored that you thought of My project as you worked on this! And I'm thrilled to have been an inspiration to "keep at it" until it Did feel "right"! The result is Divine!!!

That lady looks so knowing doesn't she, like she has a secret she isn't going to share with any one but her diary! I have had this picture for a long time but it has only just occurred to me now, that she is dressed as the main characters would have been dressed in the first chapters of the book Green Dolphin Street; in early Victorian. The book begins during childhoods of Marianne and Marguerite. The original reason that I hung that picture was because I liked it, but only Now I understand Why I liked it so Thank you again Merja and I am so glad that you have enjoyed the way that this has all turned out!:D

I had some 'not so clear ones' included, that I know,( sigh) but I am striving to make the shots as interesting and as creatively lit so that none of the story will be compromised. Every picture tells a story and that is why I have enjoyed your blog so much! You like and use the atmospheric pictures too and I always feel as if I am IN your rooms and not just looking at them whenever you post! I am delighted that you want to "hide in the cozy bed with a book and read" and I agree, I do too! :D Hide, but "not to be afraid of the rain outside the window"; beautifully said my Dear Friend, beautifully said.

    1. Liduna that is such a Lovely compliment, Thank You so much! I am so glad that you like the additional curtains and as you might have already read, I will be posting how I did them next week.
When I was a youngster I used to sleep in a lower bunk bed with my sister Bev sleeping in the top bunk. It was always so cosy to be hunkered down under the blankets with my favorite books piled around and the record player stationed beside my bed. There the slats of the upper bunk were visible from my bed below, so perhaps this entire miniature bedroom project is subconsciously touched with buried nostalgia? And maybe not just for me but mayhap for others too? :)

    2. Hi Elizabeth and Liduina! Please let me add my cozy thought to your comments! I had that same experience with bunk beds, Elizabeth.... when it was cold we would tuck blankets under the edge of the upper mattress and let them hang down to make a tent... then we played all day in the warm enclosed "canopied" bed!! 41. Good Morning Catherine! Let first of all let me say "Welcome!" I am so glad that you are here!
It is such a compliment to me that you see similarities between My work and Yours! It is one of the very reasons that I have joined your blog! Every room that you have done is how thought I would have done it, Except that yours is Perfect! Yes, the indirect lighting the hidden spaces the recesses and the intimacy is all Spot On, and the execution of it is all IMPECCABLE. I love the courage of the orange sofa and the mix of scales in the decoration of your mouse house such as the floral wallpaper and the organic trim around the windows in the parlor. I have often just lingered in you mouse bedroom absorbing the ambience of it and I will admit that I have Always Loved your Incredible bed enclosure! So to come to the point Catherine, you have been a "HERO" in my eyes, ever since I found your blog! To know now that my comments have caused you to read GREEN DOLPHIN STREET has put an Enormous SMILE on my face! My dear friend Janine, has recently told me the exact same thing! hahahah! So I am thrilled to bits that my work meets with your approval Catherine! What a Fabulous way to begin my day!!!! :D

I am WAY behind the curve, but I have been reading through your blog a bit at a time, and have been enjoying it. I just had to post here though, even though I am a year or so late, because I think your addition of the loft in this room was genius! It SO enhanced the space. It makes you want to move right in. I think perhaps it is that bit of hidden space that makes you want to see what else there is in the room...I don't really know, but adding this to the room, in my view, REALLY amped up the space a lot. Good Work!

As you have no doubt learned by now, I work in rather hap-hazard and unconventional ways. I don't set out to do so on purpose but it has become the "norm" for me. I make mistakes and in the process of trying to correct them, I find I have achieved a solution that improves on the original idea better than I could have imagined. I am very happy that the loft worked out so well, and I am Delighted that you find that it feels welcoming; that to me, is Vital!
I don't know about you, but if I were a kid, I would be up in that loft with a blanket, a flashlight, and all of my favorite books....
