Je t' a Door

Pardon my french!   ( hee hee) I chose to deliberately misspell the title to this posting.  A little play on words, if you will.  I can't truthfully say that I 'ADORE' this door, but  I sure Do Like it a Lot!

I found that I had A door in my " Tickle Trunk" of wood scraps that is parked outside in my garage.   Unfortunately, it was a door without the door frame and without the jamb so I would have to make that part myself.
( uh oh )
I'm not good with wood.
The door was a standard size and once installed, it used up all the available wall space!   I squeezed out the frame to the door( only just barely) and had to reenforce the wall in the upper corner to keep it stable.  As you can see, the door is hung and will even swing.  Yay.
(whew! )
In this photo you can see just how close to the top edge of the wall, the door is.  You can also see how close it is to the fireplace.  I decided to in-fill the narrow strip of wall  between the door trim and the fireplace panel, with some additional wood trim.  Visually, it now looks like a wall of wood panelling.  The fireplace blends into the door surround, so it all evens out to appear as a single unit.    In the previous post of 'Hal Yay You Yah', the final picture is of what I had expected the size and shape of the door would be.  It now looks very different from what I had originally planned.  I stained and aged the surface of the door so that the wood looks old rather than new and I also added a metal plate ( an English feature) just above the latch handle, which I have painted a flat black.
and as usual, Everything was a big struggle to install.
As a carpenter;
I SUCK!
( Thankfully, I didn't quit my day job! )

hah
Here is how it all appears with the door to the bathroom now in place.
To the left is the narrow stairwell with the light installed.
Looking to the left, I decided that the walls needed  switch plates.
I placed one just above the foot of the bed and then another on the exterior  window wall.
The exterior window wall

I decided that I didn't like the placement  of the switch plate and moved it to here instead.  I have it Blue Tacked on for now 'just to see'.  This makes more sense to me to have the switch plate at the top of the staircase under the light, wouldn't you agree?  The switch for the bedroom lights is on the opposite side of this wall.
So here is what it looks like now
I just HAD to include this photo again.   It is soooo pretty!

Another overview of the entire bedroom.
I have also aged the linoleum with some gel wood stain which has toned down the bold pattern.

An overview of the entire house on Green Dolphin Street.
(  By special request, from Janine. )
The Parlor and the bedroom are "Finished", ( I keep saying that and then do something else to them, perhaps I should say then, " maybe finished"? )
and the bathroom and the kitchen with the missing staircase, are still, yet to be done.

Je t' adore!

The whole atmosphere in the whole house is balanced and lovely. Just as Noëlle says I like the lights in your house, it just gives that extra dimension to a cosy house! Mes compliments à vous :D!! I hope to see what you will do with the staircase and the bathroom ;)!

    1. Hello Ilona! What a Great Pleasure to hear your words, Thank you! I am also happy with the way the door looks especially with the aging of it. I love to add years to nearly everything I can and this door was very obliging! Thank you for noticing the balance of the rooms in the house, Ilona. I made an effort to try and make the 2 larger rooms work well with the 2 smaller ones and that in itself proved to be a challenge. I know that my labor was not in vain when you make such a kind observation about it. I appreciate it very much!

I wish that I could say that it was my plan from the beginning but I kind of just fell into it, as the house took on character. It has developed into shades of russet, terra cotta, blues and browns. A very warm pallet for a house that is subject to the vagaries of the weather!

    1. Hi Em! I have enjoyed your comment very much! I love it that this episode of the house on Green Dolphin Street " sings to you"!!! When I was trying to decide what type of door to use, I had several options and not one of them was right. Remembering the trunk in the garage unearthed this one lone door and... Viola! I guess you could say that this door sung to me too. You could call it fate, I will call it a blessing but I do believe that it was definitely Meant to Be. Thanks very much Em! and I am looking forward to seeing more of your Adventures with your 'Chocolat' very soon!

  8. I love your pun...(and just made a new Pinterest board titled Pardon My French, so that was also a bit of a hudgy wink from above!) Regarding your project: the door looks wonderfully in place in the room...I never would have guessed the struggle you had to install it. I'm not very good with wood either, so can relate to your anxiety about this part of miniature making. There's something very satisfying about attempting a type of project that isn't our strong suit though, when it does work out well it really adds a sense of confidence for the next time. This miniature room has so much personality...you've captured that aged ambience and rich sense of history so well. It reminds me of the interior of period movies that I have admired...when the designer really understands the soul of the place they are portraying, when it doesn't look staged, but organic...as if it just evolved over time. You've done that here. After admiring your room I think that I really need to find a copy of Green Dolphin Street. Speaking of Elizabeth Goudge, you would so enjoy her book The Scent of Water (yes, I know I have mentioned this before!) One of the themes of the book is a beloved collection of miniatures, "the little things" as the original owner callsthem, who are inherited my a niece and play a part in the transformation of a neglected neighbor child. Thank you Elizabeth, for sharing your lovely creation, your struggles(very inspiring to know that a miniaturist I admire doesn't just pop out her work without effort! Kind of like laboring to have a baby it is, sometimes for me...with a similar joy when the project has been birthed!) I also really appreciate your tips and how-tos, as you've probably figured out by looking at my Pinterest tutorial boards! Hugs from California from Kate♥

    1. Hello Kate! Thank you for sharing this with me! I shall have to pay a visit to your " Pardon My French" Pinterest board, I love Pinterest and you always have such wonderful images to pin from. I like your word 'hudgy'; You just may have something there! :D Your observation of the space looking organic is a good one. I really try to make the various rooms look like they have developed over the course of time, because I really enjoy the "aged ambience" environments as well as a rooms packed full of history. "The Scent of Water" you had recommended once before, so now the hunt is on to find one at the thrift store! I am such a great admirer of Elizabeth Goudge, and it is delightful that you too, are also a fan.
I believe that God blesses us with Creativity, of all kinds. When I say that I am not good with wood, I am serious! Others are really gifted in this area, but I am not one of them :( but I can do other things instead. I feel those " Hudgy's " when I work on developing the good gifts that God has given me and can share and encourage others with theirs. That to me, is what it is all about!

    1. Hello Isabelle! I want to Thank You for your very generous compliment and your faith in my questionable carpentry skills, but you must believe me when I say that they are next to nothing. They say that you should "measure twice to cut once"..... I measure over and over and over and cut and cut and cut. I can never get it right! So I have learned to FUDGE. I Fudge quite well because I have to. This door was a perfect example of what 'Good Fudging' looks like! :D I'm serious. BUT, You are right about the proportions of the door and the mood that it has created. It looks just right for the room. However, don't look too closely at the jamb, because then you Will see Fudge! Fudge is really delicious, so "fudging" just has to be good!
Anyway, I noticed that you are not building a "brand new, must-be-perfect, no faults, cracks or flaws allowed" house, so any imperfections you perceive are really what you wanted to achieve!

    1. Hello my friend! I hate to disillusion people that have so much faith in my limited capabilities when it comes to carpentry. Giac, YOU know how to control the timber, but I regrettably do not! I am at it's mercy. Why do you think that I am postponing the work on the staircase??? ( The thought of which has me shaking in my boots!) I really have to build up the courage whenever I have to tackle a wood working project. It helps to have a large tub of SPAKLE, as my new Best Friend. I can cover a whole lot of questionable cuts with the Spackle at my side. However having said all that, I really appreciate that you like the final results. The adjusting of the light switch was made after I reviewed the photos and saw that it made more sense to have it situated where the light was. Now that I have the right spot, I shall glue it permanently to the wall. I have installed them in the kitchen, the living room and also in the bathroom. 1. Hello Grandmommy! Your compliment means so much! Thank you! I am always satisfied when the projects evoke a personal response and deep feelings in the viewer! I like the way that you've expressed it with " old, dramatic and full of secrets"! the old is obvious, but the dramatic made me pause and consider.... the drama is the "action", the story unfolding, and the secrets are all the little details in the room that reveal more and more about the occupant as you discover them! It is like the movie "Rebecca" hidden secrets about the past that affect the present and again, the future. I Love it!

    1. Hello Wyrna! Thank you my dear lady for your lovely compliments! I love to mix the decor with both the old the odd and the singular. I love the eclectic look. I didn't make the fabrics other than print out the carpet onto some cotton print paper. I dyed the toile fabric in strong tea to tone it down. I actually cooked it in the microwave so that it would boil the stain into the fabric. The toile cushion on the chair was too bright so I painted it with gel wood stain thinned with some water and then blotted it well and let it dry. That is pretty much it. I like things to be easy and with the fabrics, I glue first and sew only if I have to!:D

I know my mini eye is strange but some of my favorite things in your shots are the cracks in the plaster by the window, the stain in the nooks of the stairwell on the celling, the little bumps and scuffs you have applied that make this look so vivid and lived in.

Age spots....like the back of my hands..HAHAH!!.. I'm sad now ;P

    1. Lady Jane! I am Delighted that you are a lover of the cracks in the plaster and the stains in the stairwell, bumps and all These are so much fun to add and they are special to me too! I find that some of the most beautiful people in the world are the ones that are unconventional looking and with irregular features. I find that you can remember them because they Are imperfect and have turned what could be a liability, into an asset. I apply this principal to the work that I do. I make many unintentional mistakes in my projects and often they become what I like the Very Best. Now, I deliberately batter and muck up the walls, stain the floors and chip the plaster. I find that celebrating these imperfections, like your age spots, to be Very therapeutic and relieves the stress of perfection!

As for your door I LOVE it!!! I think it is perfect all squeezed in there! In old buildings they always stuck things in somehow and made them fit! None of this up to code stuff! It makes me wish I had doors on the rooms in The Folly.... well... maybe not! I have enough projects to finish already without adding more doors!
And I think your wall switches are Fabulous!!! I am glad that you have noticed that the beam was cut into, and in truth, I was unable to do otherwise. I know that this would be frowned upon by any carpenter worth his salt but as Betsy has pointed out, many things are done, out of expediency that are not necessarily up to code, and like you've said, I had to just make it fit! You were so wise to suggest the overall pictures of the entire doll's house, in progress. It was good to see it myself and I am glad that you have enjoyed it! I kept thinking that I was viewing a stage set. The camera angles can completely control the eye of the viewer. Before Bruce's instructions on how to use this camera, I only cared about getting a clear photo, but now it is how to take the composition of the scene and make it look Alive! This takes it all to a whole new level for me, and is often more fun than composing the rooms of the doll's house. I really love it!

I love these little extras and I am delighted that you do too! Thank you for noticing them and for all of your encouraging words!

  28. I DO like this! The bedroom looks so real and I agree with the others - there's absolutely nothing wrong with your carpentry skills. The door fits in there just fine. At least in the mini world we can "make" things fit!

I also like your curtains in that room very much - also the little stairwell. It makes me want to explore!

    1. Ho Ho Ho, Irene! My carpentry skills are such that I wouldn't dare hire ME, knowing just how little I know about good construction! Hah! It is just good Fudging, as I told Isabelle. Yes the door fits and it works but that is because you haven't been privy to the behind the scenes, Bloopers. But you are correct in saying that we can in the mini world "make things fit"! ( Prayers of thanks are going up to God, even as I write this) Thank you for noticing the curtains, Irene. I am rather pleased with the way that they turned out. I gave them a ruffle valance because I had the same style in the Parlor and I liked the effect. I had to use the Pretty Pleater to get the correct depth of the pleats but then I coxed some of them out so that the look was softer and not quite so formal. There is just the right amount of light that filters through them and that adds to the romance.
Once the stairs are installed you ( and Margaret ) will be able to explore the entire house to your hearts content and I really hope that you DO!

  29. Hello Elizabeth, Wow! It was a tight fit but you did a perfect job! I love how you solved the space between the door and the fire surround. You are definitely a better carpenter than you give yourself credit for! Now remember the shut the door (get it hehe...)

    1. THANK YOU Veronique! I am so Blessed with so many mini friends that can turn a blind eye to my many mini failings with regard to my regular struggles with wood-working! hahahah The installation of the door was 'tighter than tight' for sure but now that it is done I can be satisfied with the results too! By adding just a single strip of wood trim to close the ugly gap between the door frame and the fireplace panel it made it all look cohesive. Because of just that one piece of extra trim the door Benefits Greatly! You could call it CREATIVE CARPENTRY. And Now the occupant of the house can get in and then get out of the bathroom. So important for
      Pee-ce of mind. hehehe

  30. Hello Betsy! What a great story and what a wonderful storyteller you are!!! I Love Your stories and your comments, Thank You! As to the door, I did have to squeeze it into the allotted space. It was soooo close to the edge that I was fearful of the wall breaking off and the door left to hang in Mid-Air. As to the stairwell, your confirmation of the Real Life narrowness of your old Farmhouse was very reassuring and helpful. I am so glad that you like the switches, Betsy! I think that the two of us are definitely in sync. I made mine out of pieces of skinny stick, with a tiny piece of metal filigree in the centre. I painted it all soft black and then the cut down a headpin and glued it to the centre for the push button switch. I like the way that they look on the walls. I have installed them in the Parlor, the kitchen, the stairwell, the bedroom and the bath. So much fun; All these little things, end up adding a LOT of visual Punch.... I Highly recommend that you do them too, Betsy, I know that you will be glad that you did! :D

  32. Elizbeth!
I think that door is great, it opens the correct way into the bathroom..that makes it seem all the more real .. the bed reminds me of a metal bed *same color* my great grandmother had when I was growing up (they used to put me down for naps on it when I was a child that was a long time ago but I remember it like it was yesterday , I once bumped my head on the footboard..dont ask me how I did that) so when I see your room it reminds me of hers ..thanks for those warm feelings and the wonderful memories your creations bring back to me.... I can't wait to see how the bathroom will turn out;)

    Hugs and kisses

    1. Hello Marisa! It is so Interesting that YOUR Great grandmother and MY Great grandmother, both had metal beds that we can relate this mini bed to! My grandmother's bed was brown metal with a rounded head and footboard, and I shared it with my cousins when I would go to visit for the summer holidays. It groaned and creaked with every movement but I loved it I am glad that this mini bed brings back happy memories for you too, Marisa! Warm fuzzies all around! :D

  34. Hello Caroline! Thank you so much I always enjoy hearing from you! This is such a small house and like your cosy cottages this is very compact and I think that helps to make the space feel more homely and warm! You know that after I begin a project there
always comes a time when the project begins to dictate what direction it wants to go in. This house has been calling the shots right from the time I started to hang the wallpaper on the Parlor walls. Every time I work on it I end up being surprised by the outcome. I am delighted that you are enjoying the feeling and the atmosphere that is in this house, Caroline; I am too! :D

  35. Gorgeous work, Elizabeth! I love the mood lighting, too. It reminds me of something out of an E. M. Forster novel. What a treat! xo Jennifer

  37. Dear Elizabeth, it is such a pleasure to be back here. There is a familiarity yet there's also always something new or something I haven't noticed before that'll pop up. It's like walking into a folk museum except your place is so alive and not forgotten or still.

It is easy to forget that this is a dollhouse and not real rooms and I always imagine these rooms are part of a grand old mansion for the wonderful and lush details. It is a house with a bit of something for everyone. How can anyone not love it?

  38. OH Sans! What a LOVELY thing to say!!! It is a Pleasure to have you back on the blog and I Always look forward to seeing yours and reading your generous comments on the blogs of others as our paths cross, this way and that! It makes my day when someone tells me that the house is "Alive" and looks "Real"! Your phrase calling the details "wonderful and lush" were especially welcomed and that it has a bit of "something for everyone" was the cherry on Top! So THANK YOU my very dear Sans for every kind and generous word. I, and SO MANY OTHERS, have missed you!
    kisses and hugs
