A COUPL'ER CANISTERS

HOWDY  Y 'ALL!  Let me introduce a coupl'er canisters to you folks.  To yer lef is Miz Sugar(ain't she sweet?) an  to her right is Miz Tea and  Miz Fl'rrr.  An little Rize is in behind, she'z a bit shy.....
I KNOW, I know, ... I was being corny but when I was trying to figure out what to call this tutorial , I couldn't think of how to make kitchen canisters interesting so I tried to tie in their origins and well, you know, the funny accent kinda happened.  These are in fact, COUPLERS. I bought mine from the Home Depot, 2 to a pack for a couple of  bucks, but they can be ordered on line.  They are made of brass and they are threaded inside for the lamps that they are intended for but I thought they looked like canisters and I liked the bull-nose on the top and bottom of them so I brought them home to see how I could  transform them.

These are large earring posts that I purchased at Michael's and  flat bottom exactly fits the opening of the coupler.  Of course, you will need to check the fit to make certain.

Yep, it fits

My old friend 'Quick Grip' (back again)

Add the adhesive to one end of the coupler, but first cut the post off of the earring back then secure the disk to the glued cylinder.  Now you have a canister...But Wait there's More....

I think I'll put a LID ON IT!  So this is what I need .  A head pin,  a bead for the handle and 2 disks; 1 for the lid and a slightly smaller one two keep the lid on.  NOTE:  If you want you can use a second earring back and slide a bead onto the post then trim away the excess but you will still need a smaller disk for the underside of the lid.  You might try a circle punch.

This is not absolute, I just happen to like this configuration but do what pleases you.  I have a whole lot of different sizes of plastic and metal bits and pieces that I use to compose different projects with.  Try second- hand stores for old jewelry with unusual spacers and beads.  Once you have settled on an arrangement, then use the Quick Grip glue to secure everything into place.  Test run to make sure the top looks right on your canister before everything is glued together.

I use these snips to get as close to the underside of the lid as I  can.  In this photo, I  have left some room to let you see what everything looks like, but DON'T leave a stem.

Because I wanted show some variety, I decided to make some canisters for the bathroom, although I don't think I've EVER seen brass bathroom accessories like this But who cares????  I made the soap label from a reduced magazine add and then cut it down to fit the canister.  I have to glue it to the brass and so I use my favorite paper glue which is.......?????????

When you've said "Glue N" Seal " you've said it all.

These tiny foam balls came off of the front porch of the 'Arthur' doll's house that I,m 'supposed' to be renovating.  I'm not a builder but I'm a GREAT destroyer and I really tore the poor Arthur up!!!( He'll thank me in the morning)  Meanwhile, I decided to re-purpose the foam flowers.  I think they look like cotton balls.  I cut them from the plastic stem and stuffed them into the canister. (see below, the 'stuffing' process)

The Stuffing Process

TA- DA!!!!!
Y'all come back now, Ya hear!

In which department did you find them...Lamps, please?

  9. Hello Susanne! The canisters are made from LAMP COUPLERS. They are to be found in the lighting department from the HOME DEPOT or other big box home improvement store. I know that you could find them at a LIGHTING STORE and they can also be ordered on line. The ones that I saw on line had two styles, one style was plain and the other was like the ones featured here with the rounded top and bottom. I am glad that you enjoyed this tutorial Susanne. Let me know how you make out and I wish you a great summer too!

  12. I'm glad to see this -- some artists are using capacitors in this very shape. I'm assuming that they don't understand that not only can capacitors leak the chemicals inside, they can actually explode. Very dangerous but will they listen?? They should be pointed to your site to see that you can get the exact same shape in a manner that doesn't risk spewing battery type acids (a cap is basically a short term battery folks...) all over your house or worse yet, yourself! I'd send them a link to your site if possible.
    Nice work

  13. Hi Tyla! I am not only glad that you liked this tutorial but also glad that you gave me a heads up about the capacitors! I purchased an old television that I was going to take apart just so that I could harvest those little pieces. I never knew that they could leak or explode!! I Thank You again for the forewarning. :))

  14. Hi Elizabeth~ The canisters are brilliant! I love them. I'm going to be on my way to Home Depot very soon. Thank God there are people like you, because people like me would never think to make canisters out of lamp couplers. How did you make the labels on the kitchen canisters? They are really nice. Thank you for sharing your creativity with the rest of us.

  15. Hello Grandma Weezie! Thank you for your Most Welcomed comment and for your lovely compliment too! "D I am Very Pleased to hear that there is a Home Depot within your area.:D There are different styles of Couplers that the Home Depot has so feel free to experiment. The labels are some that I made full sized and then reduced via my photocopier until I got the size I wanted, Then I made numerous copies, but this is very time consuming and wastes a lot of photocopy paper too. My computer is simply too old to download labels from the internet but there are many free Printies sites that are available; that would be the BEST way to go. I have collected some of these kitchen labels on my Pinterest Board "Prints and Possibilities" which I have found and saved. Take a look through it, and see if there is anything there that you can use. But Finally there is always the old-fashioned method of just hand drawing a label to the size that you want and then writing very small with a 0.5 gel pen, and cutting it out to paste onto the canister,and/ or finding product labels in magazines that may fit your project.
I wish you a Very Happy Hunting Grandma Weezie, and I know that your canister will be GREAT, regardless the avenue you choose. :D
